Big Lots..

The Daughter and I hit Big Lots yesterday... They had some good deals. Some of the expiration dates were good and some were not. I skipped the little canned hams until I can find a better dated lot. Cereal was a great buy.

My Daughter and I were looking at Spam. She is a vegetarian and has a minor in nutrition. She was quite intrigued by Spam and had never heard of it. She wanted to know what mechanical chicken parts were and the history of spam. [thanks to GIM I knew the extensive history of Spam] We both almost hit the floor when we saw the calorie content of a can of spam..:bear_w00t:

Anyway for those of you who do not want to see how many calories you can fit in one small can our Big Lots just got a bunch of Nutrisystem food. My Daughter tried the vegetarian chile last night and said it was really good. The ingredients seem healthy. Im going back to stock up on them today.

My take: If you really need food, lots of calories in a small package is a good thing.

Mechanically separted chicken parts are chickens smashed through a sieve to separate the meat from the chaff (...er beaks and such). Yummy.

I think I spend more FRNs at Big lots than any other store.

Yes, checking expirations is the key to shopping there. I know the managers there and if you find stuff on the shelf that is expired, or close to it, they'll cut the price in half.

Back in high school I worked part-time in a butcher shop. Mechanically separated can also mean that after they take the good cuts of meat, they run the bones through a machine that scrapes off the last bit of flssh. they don't waste any of it.

I love cans of smoked oysters but don't want to pay over $2 for them so I load up at Big Lots for $1.

I just got back from another trip to Big Lots. The expiration dates on some items really are not good. The nutisystem food is near expiration date. That's not a problem because my Daughter will go through it for work lunches this summer but its not suited for long term storage.

My store still has the seal a meal vacuum sealer for 30 dollars. I have that machine and it worked well.

Spuds it didn't have a mason jar sealer but the canister hose is the same size as the foodsaver so that attachment ordered separately would work..

Im not squeamish about stuff like that. My Mother cooked Octopus and squid all the time... it wasn't that nice calamari stuff they pass off in restaurants as octopus either. It was the whole critter fried right up..Lambs brain soup is a Greek delicacy my Mother used to make a few times a year . My Dad loved fish eyeballs although I never tried them..:bear_w00t:

I will confess I have never been able to eat Deer meat. Im sure I could if I were hungry but Im not so I won't. I think it has something to do with Bambi..

When I was little we had to eat this most disgusting stuff called blood pudding. Just the smell of it was so vile. If that wasn't bad enough I remember eating some kind of nasty stuff called souse. I think it was like cow or pig tongue and brains or something like that made into a luchmeat. It was so repulsive.
** SHIVER ALL OVER **
I think I tasted turtle soup once or twice.
